A SOCIOLINGUISTIC ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING AND CODE MIXING IN SELECTED JENIFA’S DIARY EPISODES

ABSTRACT: This study was carried out to examine a sociolinguistic analysis of code switching and code mixing in selected jenifa’s diary episodes.  Specifically, the study examine the languages used in the production of movies in Nigeria with particular emphasis on Jenifa. The study also  assess the evidence of multilingual practice in Nollywood movies with specifics on Jenifa’s diary. The study further examine the level of indigenous languages utilization in the production of Nigerian movies. This study was carried out using the historical analysis. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that a combined application of Mares’(2003) classification strategies for the analysis of multilingual discourse in fictional texts and Irvin and Gal’s(2000) ideological representations of linguistic differences provide the framework for the analysis. The study also, reveals that the evidence of multilingual practice in Nollywood movies are of two types. The study hereby recommend that Nigerians should desist from stereotypic beliefs which are injurious to the peaceful existence of the country. Beliefs such as ascribing violence to some ethnic groups can fan enmity among the different tribes. This study also recommends that humour practitioners such as producers of humour and humour actors and actresses should also avail themselves of the knowledge of the language resources which they deploy in creating humour. This can be achieved by reading theses such as this and that will give them a better understanding of their acts and how to improve at it.
